Product Design Systems Engineer - Network Design

The role

As part of our Naval Combat Systems group, the Product Design Systems Engineer – Network Design is responsible for the AusCMS (Combat Management System) requirements and design of the network aspects of AusCMS. The role will be responsible for all aspects of the AusCMS network design providing scalable solutions that meet the family and variant requirements.

Further, the successful candidate’s tasks will include:

  • AusCMS level analysis and network design cognisant of the overall systems functionality and in consideration of the capabilities and roadmap for the Global 9LV Product
  • Collaboration with projects and combat system engineers to clearly define AusCMS network scope, resolve issues / risks and ensure alignment of project and customer expectations with the AusCMS development
  • Ongoing coordination of system engineering activities with other engineering disciplines/teams, including software, for requirements such as VLANs; hardware, for the selection of physical network equipment; logistics for FMECA and RCM assessment of network design; safety, for ensuring the network design meets safety requirements and security, for the security design of the network.
  • Participation in design reviews meetings (e.g. SRR, PDR, CDR), working groups and demonstrations with internal and external stakeholders
  • Specification and management of change to engineering baselines for assigned capability/system/product.

Flexible work arrangements such as hybrid work from home / office, 9 day fortnight and part time (0.8 FTE minimum) will be considered for this role.

About you

Your skills and experience will include:

  • A tertiary qualification in systems/software engineering, computer science or a related technical discipline
  • Designing networks for defence Operational Technology (OT) systems
  • Designing multiple security level systems
  • Segregation, isolation, the principle of least privilege, and the weakest link in secure network design
  • Producing and reviewing technical documentation
  • Performing requirements definition, design, implementation, integration, verification, validation and support activities on large scale, complex software intensive real time systems (e.g. military Command and Control (C2) systems, CMS systems, or commercial / civil equivalent systems) (desirable)
  • Demonstrated ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams and build relationships with internal and external customers and stakeholders
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication
  • Analysing problems in a structured and scientific manner
  • Developing creative and innovative solutions


Applicants must be Australian citizens and eligible to obtain and maintain a NV1/NV2 clearance.
